Čoarvemátta: Wood and Sustainability for a Brighter Future

In the Finnmarksvidda plateau, in Kautokeino, Norway, stands Čoarvemátta, a remarkable example of how architecture can embrace sustainability and harmony with the landscape. Designed by Snøhetta in collaboration with 70°N Arkitektur and artist Joar Nango, this multifunctional building celebrates Sami culture, blending tradition and innovation.

Serving as the home of the Sami National Theatre Beaivváš, the Sami High School, and the Reindeer Herding School, Čoarvemátta is more than a cultural center. It is a living testament to how wood and sustainable architecture can shape a future that respects the environment.

Wood as the Heart of the Project

Wood is the central element of Čoarvemátta, chosen for its ability to integrate seamlessly with the landscape and its value as a sustainable material. The facade in mined pine, the roof covered in Kebony wood, and the exposed wooden structures inside echo traditional Sami constructions while showcasing wood’s potential for creating resilient, innovative, and aesthetically stunning buildings.

Wood is not just a natural material but also a key player in combating climate change. Its use in architecture reduces the carbon footprint by storing CO₂ and minimizing reliance on high-impact materials like concrete.

Harmony Between Humans and Nature

Čoarvemátta demonstrates that architecture in harmony with the landscape can improve people’s quality of life while respecting the land. Its fluid forms, inspired by the surrounding hills, and the palette of local materials, such as reclaimed Alta slate from the old school, highlight a deep respect for the environment and local history.

This dialogue between architecture and nature extends to the outdoor spaces, such as reindeer enclosures crafted with local artisanal techniques, blending tradition with innovation.

Energy Self-Sufficiency: A Necessity for the Future

Beyond wood, Čoarvemátta’s sustainability is evident in its cutting-edge energy system. The 40 geothermal wells provide 90% of the building’s energy needs, proving that self-sufficient, low-impact structures are possible even in extreme climates.

This approach showcases how technology and design can collaborate to create buildings that not only respect but enhance the environment.
