On August 6, the Ministry of Green Transition approved Decree No. 256 of June 23, 2022 on new provisions on minimum environmental criteria (CAM) for construction, which will come into force 120 days after its publication. Below we will see what it is all about and why it is critically important news for the green building sector.<\/p>\n
CAM, i.e., minimum environmental criteria “are the environmental requirements defined for the various stages of the purchasing process, aimed at identifying the best design solution, product or service from the environmental point of view along the life cycle, taking into account market availability,” which are of mandatory application by all contracting stations in the design and tender documents for new construction, renovation and maintenance of public buildings thanks to Legislative Decree 50\/2016 “Procurement Code” (as amended byD.Lgs 56\/2017). In a nutshell, they are environmental requirements useful in identifying the best design solution, product or service with regard to the life cycle of the work, where sustainability is the watchword. <\/p>\n
The introduction of CAM in public procurement, represents a breakthrough as this obligation ensures that national green public procurement policy is incisive with the goal of reducing environmental impacts, promoting sustainable and “circular” production and consumption patterns, and spreading “green” employment. It encourages therefore, the use of organic building materials that can store carbon, such as wood, to fall within the goals of the European Green Deal. <\/p>\n
Last August, important changes were introduced for the use of wood, i.e., in tenders, priority is given to constructions using at least 20% renewable raw materials where it is specifically stated that they must be composed of “biomass from a living source that can be continuously replenished.” This configures wood as the most suitable choice! But that is not the end of the story; the personnel employed must also be highly specialized. This shelters the use of wood, because it allows the experts in the field to put the material’s myriad potential to good use with an eye to its most delicate characteristics. <\/p>\n
These additions have given new standing to wood, which is now the material par excellence for public administration facilities. Wood is the material of the future not only because it is a natural store of CO2, but also because its entire supply chain has minimal impacts and zero waste (all the material is reused in a variety of products), plus thanks to new prefabrication systems it is an excellent ally in terms of time, finish and safety.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
