How does PEFC work?

PEFC, which stands for “Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification,” is a forest certification system that promotes sustainable forest management worldwide. PEFC is one of two major internationally recognized forest certification systems, the other being the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

Here is how PEFC works:

Standards and Criteria: PEFC develops standards and criteria that define sustainable forest management practices. These standards are set at the national or regional level and take into account the specific conditions and local laws of each country.

Forest certification: Forest companies and forest owners wishing to obtain PEFC certification must comply with the established standards and criteria. This involves responsible management of forest resources, conservation of biodiversity, respect for the rights of workers and local communities, and other sustainable practices.

Audit and verification: Companies seeking PEFC certification must undergo audits by accredited third-party organizations to ensure that they meet the standards. These independent organizations verify compliance of forestry practices and issue certification if companies meet the requirements.

Use of the mark: Certified companies can use the PEFC logo on their products to indicate to consumers that the timber or wood-based products come from PEFC-certified forests and are also viewable on PEFC’s website. This helps consumers make informed choices about purchasing products related to sustainable forest management.

Chain of Custody: In addition to forest certification, PEFC also operates the chain of custody certification system. This system tracks PEFC-certified timber throughout the supply chain, from the forest to the end consumer, ensuring that the product retains its certification along the production and distribution path. If the company meets the requirements set by the PEFC chain of custody system during audits, it will receive chain of custody certification. This certificate confirms that the company is authorized to use the PEFC logo on its products. The non-certified company can use the certified material to produce products, but cannot declare their products as “certified” or use the certification logo (such as the PEFC logo) on their products unless they have obtained chain of custody certification.

PEFC was created to promote sustainable forest management and encourage companies to engage in responsible forest conservation practices. It is important to note that PEFC is a voluntary certification system, and companies choose to participate in it to demonstrate their commitment to environmental sustainability.
